HDMI Specification Version 2.2 Supports 96Gbps Bandwidth

2025-04-07

At CES 2025, the HDMI Forum officially announced the HDMI 2.2 specification. The launch of this new standard marks a major leap forward in bandwidth and connectivity performance for HDMI technology. As global demand for high-definition video and high-refresh-rate display devices surges, HDMI 2.2 breaks through the limitations of existing technologies with its bandwidth of up to 96Gbps, bringing users' visual experience to an unprecedented new height. The HDMI 2.2 standard released this time will not only have a profound impact on the specification formulation of related products in the industry, but will also bring consumers more choices and help smart devices achieve greater breakthroughs in future development.

1

The most notable feature of HDMI 2.2 is its doubled bandwidth. Compared with HDMI 2.1's 48Gbps, HDMI2.2's bandwidth can reach 96Gbps. The higher bandwidth of 96Gbps and the next-generation HDMI fixed rate link (FRL) technology provide better audio and video for various device applications.

    2

The new specification will support higher resolutions and refresh rates and provide more high-quality options. The faster 96Gbps bandwidth meets the transmission requirements of data-intensive immersive and virtual applications such as AR/VR/MR, spatial reality and light field displays, as well as various commercial applications such as large digital signage, medical imaging and machine vision. To improve audio and video synchronization, especially in complex setups involving devices such as audio and video receivers or sound bars, HDMI 2.2 includes the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP). This feature is expected to provide smoother playback and better coordination between audio and video elements.
The update also introduces the new Ultra96 HDMI cable, which supports 96Gbps bandwidth and unlocks all the features of HDMI 2.2. This cable is part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, which requires each length model to be tested and certified. Certified cables will display an official certification label to assure consumers of their reliability.

        3

In actual use, the introduction of HDMI 2.2 will change the user's entertainment experience. Whether playing games, watching HD movies, or operating multiple screens, users will experience smoother and more realistic picture presentation. High bandwidth can support higher refresh rates, which is especially important in fast-moving images, and can significantly reduce image tearing and latency, bringing users an immersive experience. At the same time, support for multiple color formats also makes film and television works and game images richer in details, enhancing the overall immersion.
